Bob Gibson gained his seventh straight victory in the opener and Donn Clendenon homered for the only run in the nightcap as the Cardinals beat the Phillies in a twi-night doubleheader, 6-4 and 1-0. The sweep extended the Cardinals' winning streak to five games and gave them a record of 12 victories in their last 13 outings.

In the lidlifter, Gibson led the Cardinals batters with three hits and drove in one run. Ted Simmons backed his pitcher with a homer and triple. Willie Montanez had a homer for the Phillles, but struck out with the potential tying run on base in the ninth inning of the nightcap. [The Sporting News]
