Tom Seaver pitched the fourth one-hitter of his major league career as the Mets won the opener of a doubleheader, 2-0, but the Padres came back to gain a split with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap. Seaver held the Padres hitless until Leron Lee singled with one out in the ninth inning. The Mets' ace bore down to preserve his victory by inducing Nate Colbert to ground into a double play. The Mets scored both their runs in the third inning on the wildness of Clay Kirby. Bud Harrelson singled with two out and Kirby then walked Wayne Garrett, John Milner, Jim Fregosi and Ed Kranepool in succession.

In the nightcap, after Colbert homered in the eighth to tie the score at 2-2, the Padres opened the ninth with safe bunts by Johnny Jeter and Fred Kendall. Enzo Hernandez also bunted, but forced Jeter. Cito Gaston popped up, but Derrel Thomas laced a single for his third hit of the game to drive in the tie-breaking run and an extra tally followed across the plate when Milner bobbled Thomas' hit in right field.
