In a make-up of the previous night's rained-out game, the Cubs won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-1, but Phil Niekro pitched the Braves to a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Fergie Jenkins, who pitched the lidlifter for the Cubs, yielded a run in the second inning on doubles by Earl Williams and Darrell Evans and trailed, 1-0, in a duel with Ron Schueler, who allowed only three hits in the first seven stanzas. However, Jose Cardenal and Don Kessinger singled in the eighth, leading to the appearance of Joe Hoerner, who failed in relief. After hitting Billy Williams with a pitch to load the bases with one out, Hoerner walked Jim Hickman to force in the tying run. Ron Santo grounded to Evans, Kessinger scoring, and when Evans threw wildly to the plate, Williams also came home. Carmen Fanzone then singled to drive in the final tally.

In the nightcap, Niekro singled and scored on a double by Ralph Garr in the third inning. Marty Perez drew a pass with the bases loaded for another tally in the fourth and Mike Lum provided what proved to be the winning run with a homer in the fifth.
