Helping himself with the bat, Gary Nolan also had support from Johnny Bench and gained his 12th victory when the Reds defeated the Cubs, 3-2. Pete Rose singled in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Bench.

Jim Hickman homered for the Cubs in the fourth, but the Reds regained the lead in their half when George Foster singled, stole second and scored on a single by Nolan. After the Cubs again pulled even in the sixth on a double by Randy Hundley and single by Don Kessinger, Nolan singled for his second hit of the game in the seventh, Rose walked and Bench drove in the deciding run with a single.
