The Pirates' bench strength manifested itself when "super subs" Gene Clines, Vic Davalillo and Jose Pagan contributed to a 5-1 victory over the Astros. Clines rapped a triple and two singles. Davalillo hit a double and single, his double coming ahead of a homer by Willie Stargell in the third inning. Pagan homered as a pinch-hitter for Dock Ellis in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
