Jim Northrup batted in two runs, scored one and set up another tally with a sacrifice bunt as the Tigers defeated the Royals, 5-3. Tom Timmerman, with relief help from Fred Scherman, gained his first victory since June 21. Northrup singled with the bases loaded in the second inning to produce the Tigers' first two runs. Doubles by Northrup and Bill Freehan added a tally in the fifth.

Aurelio Rodriguez doubled in the seventh and was bunted to third by Northrup. After Freehan walked, Rodriguez scored on a passed ball. Norm Cash then doubled to drive in Freehan with the Tigers' final run. [The Sporting News]
