Playing before Pittsburgh's largest crowd of the year, 49,391, the Pirates swept a doubleheader with the Astros, winning the first game in 10 innings, 3-2, and taking the second game in regulation time by the same 3-2 score. In the lidlifter, Bob Robertson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the Pirates' winning run.

In the nightcap, the Pirates picked up an unearned run in the first inning and then scored twice in the fourth on a single by Al Oliver, double by Willie Stargell and single by Rennie Stennett. Dave Giusti, who was the winner in relief in the first game, saved the second game after giving up a single by Lee May that drove in the Astros' two runs in the ninth inning. [The Sporting News]
