The Reds concentrated their attack in the middle three innings when they scored all their runs to defeat the Cubs, 7-2. In the fourth, after a single by Bobby Tolan, double by Johnny Bench and pass to Tony Perez loaded the bases, Denis Menke hit a sacrifice fly, Tolan scoring. Bench took third on the play and after Perez stole second, Cesar Geronimo batted them home with a single.

Pete Rose homered in the fifth and the Reds' final three runs followed in the sixth. Menke singled and Darrel Chaney walked, Wayne Simpson beat out a bunt and when Dan McGinn threw wildly to first, Menke and Chaney scored.
