Relieving in the 10th inning, Clay Carroll threw only one pitch and was the loser when Billy Williams connected for a homer to give the Cubs a 2-1 victory over the Reds, who were stopped on a seven-game winning streak. The Cubs counted their first run off Gary Nolan in the sixth on singles by Jose Cardenal and Glenn Beckert and sacrifice fly by Ron Santo.
