A squeeze bunt in the first game and pass with the bases loaded in the second game provided the winning runs for the Red Sox in a 2-1 and 4-3 sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Athletics. The nightcap was decided in 11 innings. Marty Pattin pitched the opener for the Red Sox and gained his sixth straight victory when Doug Griffin laid down a safe squeeze bunt with two out in the seventh inning, scoring Danny Cater with the tie-breaking tally.

Joe Rudi hit a three-run homer in the second game to put the A's ahead, 3-2, but Griffin drove in a run with a single in the ninth inning to tie the score. Griffin, who had seven hits in nine trips for his night's work, was passed intentionally to load the bases with two out in the 11th. Darold Knowles then was unable to find the plate and walked Carl Yastrzemski on four straight pitches to force in John Kennedy, who had opened the inning with a double. [The Sporting News]
