The four-hit pitching of Fritz Peterson and Mel Stottlemyre, plus a barrage of homers, carried the Yankees to 6-0 and 3-0 victories over the Angels in a twi-night doubleheader. Bobby Murcer hit two homers in support of Peterson in the opener. After Murcer's second round-tripper in the fifth, the Yankees had their first three-homer inning of the season when Ron Blomberg and Johnny Callison also hit for the circuit. Stottlemyre shut out the Angels for the fifth straight time in the nightcap. John Ellis homered with a man on base in the seventh to seal the victory. [The Sporting News] |
