With two out in the 14th inning, Doug Griffin scored from first base on an error by Sal Bando to bring the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Athletics. Don Newhauser, the winner in relief for the second straight night, turned in a terrfic clutch performance, taking over with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th and retiring Dave Duncan on a pop fly and Don Mincher and Adrian Garrett on strikes. The A's filled the sacks again in the 14th with two away but failed to score when Newhauser fanned George Hendrick.

Griffin, who had hit his first homer of the season in the fourth, singled with two out in the Red Sox half of the 14th. Carl Yastrzemski then smashed a hot grounder that bounced off the second baseman's glove and while the A's pursued the ball in right-center field, Griffin raced home. [The Sporting News]
