Joe Morgan rapped four straight hits to set the early pace for the Reds, who then broke a tie with two runs in the eighth inning on a safe bunt by Ted Uhlaender and single by Darrel Chaney to pull away from the Pirates, 6-3. Morgan drove in two runs and scored one.

With the game tied, 3-3, Johnny Bench walked in the eighth and took third on a single by Tony Perez. Cesar Geronimo struck out, but Uhlaender laid down his bunt to score Bench.
