The Red Sox, playing separate-admission, day-and-night games with the Athletics, lost in the sunshine, 5-3, but came back to win under the lights, 3-0. Carl Yastrzemski hit his first homer of the season in the day contest, but the Red Sox were stopped on their seven-game winning streak when the Athletics broke a 3-3 tie with two unearned runs in the eighth inning. With two out, Dave Duncan lifted a pop fly and was safe when Doug Griffin dropped the ball after colliding with John Kennedy. Ted Kubiak walked and Gene Tenace, batting for Darold Knowles, drove in both runners with a triple.

Griffin made amends for his error by driving in one run and scoring another in the night game to support Sonny Siebert, who posted the shutout with a five-hitter. [The Sporting News]
