After failing to hold a 5-0 lead, the Braves came back to beat the Cardinals, 8-7, when Dusty Baker homered in the 10th inning to give Denny McLain his first victory in an Atlanta uniform. McLain, appearing in the 10th as the Braves' fourth pitcher of the game, retired the Cardinals in order and then was the winner when Baker homered on the first pitch thrown by Tony Cloninger, who had just taken over in relief for the Cards.
