. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Marking Whitey Lockman's first appearance as manager of the Cubs, succeeding Leo Durocher, Fergie Jenkins pitched a one-hitter and won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-0, but the Phillies rallied to capture the nightcap, 3-2. Willie Montanez doubled in the fourth inning for the only hit off Jenkins. The Cubs decided the outcome in the second inning with two runs on a double by Ron Santo. Billy Williams batted in the other two runs with a single in the eighth.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap before Jack Aker failed in relief of Burt Hooton. Greg Luzinski drove in the tying runs with a triple in the eighth inning and the Phillies added the winning run in the ninth on a single by Deron Johnson, an error by Aker on a bunt by Don Money, and a single by John Bateman.
