. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Pirates, who were shut out, 1-0, in the 10-inning opener, built up a big lead in the nightcap and stood off the Mets, 7-5, to split a twi-night doubleheader. Jon Matlack pitched a four-hitter for the Mets in the lidlifter and gained the victory when the Mets scored against Nelson Briles in the 10th on a double by Cleon Jones, safe bunt by Ed Kranepool and sacrifice fly by Wayne Garrett.

Willie Stargell started the Pirates' scoring in the second game with a two-run homer in the first inning. Jackie Hernandez also batted in two runs with a double and single as the Pirates increased their advantage to 7-0 before the Mets began to rally with a three-run homer by Duffy Dyer in the seventh. Ted Martinez batted in two runs in the eighth before Dave Giusti took over to record his 15th save. [The Sporting News]
