Dave Roberts, who was The Sporting News' 1972 college Player of the Year at Oregon, drove in two runs with a single and homer to lead the Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Reds. Clay Kirby, pitching for the Padres, gave up only five hits, but lost his bid for a shutout when Pete Rose homered for the Reds' run in the eighth inning. [The Sporting News]
