Don Durham homered with two men on base for his first major league hit, but the Cardinals' rookie righthander was knocked out in the eighth inning and lost to the Phillies, 8-3. Durham, failing to protect a 3-2 lead, walked Oscar Gamble to open the eighth. Denny Doyle followed with a single. When Larry Bowa bunted, Durham threw late to third and all runners were safe, loading the bases.

Tommy Hutton, who had knocked in two earlier runs with a sacrifice fly and infield out, made it four RBIs for the night with a single to send the Phillies ahead. Other runs followed on a single by Willie Montanez, triple by Don Money and single by Bill Robinson. [The Sporting News]
