The slugging of Merv Rettenmund, Boog Powell and Paul Blair enabled the Orioles to end their four-game losing streak with an 11-2 victory over the Red Sox. Rettenmund, who singled and scored in the first inning, homered with a man on base in the fifth and doubled in another run in the seventh. The Orioles then erupted for six runs in the eighth, two counting on a homer by Powell and three crossing the plate on a double by Blair, who also scored himself on a single by Bobby Grich.

Carlton Fisk set a Red Sox record for most homers by a catcher, hitting his 18th of the season. [The Sporting News]
