Sparky Lyle saved one game and won another as the Yankees defeated the Brewers in a doubleheader, 3-0 and 6-4, with the second contest going 10 innings. Steve Kline pitched the first eight innings of the opener before going out for a pinch-hitter and Lyle finished to pick up his 24th save. John Ellis accounted for two Yankee runs with a homer in the sixth.

The Brewers scored all their runs in the nightcap in the first inning, three coming on a round-tripper by Tommie Reynolds, and held a 4-3 lead going into the ninth when Bernie Allen tied the score with a homer. Jerry Kenney singled for the Yankees in the 10th, stole second and counted the tie-breaking run on a two-out single by Thurman Munson. Bobby Murcer followed with a double to add an insurance marker.
