The Royals bunched a double, three singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly for all their scoring in the fourth inning to defeat the Athletics, 4-2. Catfish Hunter, who was stopped on his six-game winning streak, had a 2-0 lead before becoming the victim of the Royals' outburst.

Richie Scheinblum walked to start off and scored on a double by Ed Kirkpatrick and sacrifice fly by Lou Piniella. Hunter then passed Freddie Patek intentionally to get at Dick Drago, but the Royals' pitcher, hitless in his last 26 times at bat, surprised with a single to drive in the tying run. Cookie Rojas and Amos Otis followed with run-scoring singles to provide the Royals' winning margin. [The Sporting News]
