Leo Cardenas' failure to tag second base as the middleman on an attempted double play enabled the White Sox to defeat the Angels, 4-3. After getting a 1-0 lead on a homer by Jay Johnstone in the third, the White Sox loaded the bases in the eighth on a single by Stan Bahnsen, an error on a bunt by pat Kelly, a sacrifice and intentional pass to Dick Allen. Carlos May then grounded to Sandy Alomar, who threw to Cardenas, apparently forcing Allen. Cardenas' relay to Bob Oliver retired May for what should have been the third out.

However, base umpire Merle Anthony ruled Cardenas had missed touching second base and Allen was safe. Buddy Bradford, running for Bahnsen, scored on the play and when Oliver, thinking the inning was over, tossed the ball toward the pitcher's mound, Kelly also counted what proved to be the winning run.
