Taking advantage of an error by Mickey Lolich, the Yankees broke a tie with two unearned runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Tigers, 4-2. Thurman Munson opened with a single and when Roy White bunted, both runners were safe on Lolich's fumble. Felipe Alou was hit by a pitch, filling the bases.
