Freddie Patek scored the tying run in the eighth inning and drove in the winning run in the ninth as the Royals defeated the Athletics, 4-3. After the Royals took the lead with two unearned runs, the A's bunched three singles, an infield out and triple by Gene Tenace to go ahead in the fourth. Patek singled in the eighth, took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on an infield hit by Cookie Rojas and scored on a grounder by Amos Otis.

In the ninth, Richie Scheinblum singled. Pinch-runner Steve Hovley advanced to second on an infield out. After an intentional pass to Lou Piniella, Paul Schaal struck out, but Patek came through with his winning single. [The Sporting News]
