The clutch relief pitching of Fred Norman, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam with none out in the eighth inning, saved the Padres' 5-2 victory over the Giants. Clay Kirby, who was the winner on Norman's save, gave up back-to-back homers by Willie McCovey and Ken Henderson for the Giants' runs in the fourth.

Cito Gaston batted in two runs for the Padres with a single, Garry Jestadt accounted for a pair with an infield out and homer and Jerry Morales produced a run with a round-tripper. [The Sporting News]
