After Steve Kline allowed only three hits in the first eight innings, Sparky Lyle struggled through the ninth to save the Yankees' 1-0 victory over the Tigers. The Yankees scored their run in the fourth on a double by Bobby Murcer, groundout by Ron Blomberg and infield hit by Johnny Callison.

Gates Brown greeted Lyle with a double in the ninth. Norm Cash struck out, but Bill Freehan bounced a grounder that Gene Michael knocked down. Michael was able to keep Tony Taylor, running for Brown, from advancing while Freehan reached first on the infield hit. Jim Northrup grounded out, moving Taylor to third and Freehan to second.
