John Hiller, making his first start for the Tigers since suffering a heart attack in January, 1971, was the victim of three unearned runs in the first and drew the defeat.

Buddy Bell, who had four hits in the game, led off with a single and Jack Brohamer followed with another single. Hiller retired the next two batters, but Gates Brown then erred on a line drive by Ray Fosse, allowing one run to score, and Graig Nettles followed with a single to drive in two more tallies.
