Although tagged for 10 hits, Larry Dierker lasted the route and pitched the Astros to a 6-3 victory over the Giants. The Astros made it possible for Dierker to survive by piling up five runs in the second inning. A walk to Doug Rader, double by Tommy Helms and single by Roger Metzger accounted for the first two tallies. Metzger, who took second on the throw to the plate, scored on a single by Cesar Cedeno. After stealing second, Cedeno also counted on a single by Lee May. Bob Watson and Johnny Edwards followed with singles to drive in May with the fifth run. Jim Wynn homered for the Astros' final tally in the fourth. Ken Henderson hit a two-run homer for the Giants in the eighth. [The Sporting News] |
