Bob Gibson, who pitched complete games in 11 of his previous 12 victories, needed help from Diego Segui to nail down No. 13 as the Cardinals defeated the Padres, 6-4. Luis Melendez homered with a man on base for the Cards.

The Padres had round-trippers by Nate Colbert and Derrel Thomas. Segui replaced Gibson with two men on base and one out in the eighth inning and put down the Padres' threat. [The Sporting News]
