After giving up three singles in the first inning, Steve Blass yielded only one more hit the rest of the way and pitched the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Padres. Singles by Nate Colbert, Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall, together with a walk and error, gave the Padres their runs in the first.

The Pirates tied the score in the fourth and then posted their winning runs in the eighth when Blass was safe on an error and Vic Davalillo, Dave Cash and Al Oliver followed with singles. [The Sporting News]
