Luis Tiant held the White Sox to two hits and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-0 victory. The White Sox were handcuffed until Carlos May doubled with two out in the seventh inning. Tony Muser added the other safety with a pinch-single in the the ninth. Tommy Harper gave Tiant the only run that the veteran Cuban righthander needed by hitting a homer in the first inning.
