The White Sox, who staged a dramatic ninth-inning rally to win the first game of a doubleheader, 9-7, moved into a first-place tie with the Athletics in West division, although losing the second game to the Red Sox, 5-4. The White Sox led in the opener, 5-1, before the Red Sox scored three runs off Wilbur Wood in the eighth and three off Terry Forster in the ninth. The White Sox began their rally with a single by Rich Morales and walk to Ed Spiezio. After the next two batters went out, Walt Williams drove in one run with a single and Pat Kelly followed with the winning three-run homer.

In the nightcap, the Red Sox broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run outburst in the fifth. Singles by Bob Montgomery, John Curtis and Tommy Harper produced the first run and, after John Kennedy walked, Carl Yastrzemski cleared the bases with a triple. [The Sporting News]
