Continuing his sensational relief work, Sparky Lyle gained a victory and also scored the first run as the Yankees defeated the Rangers, 2-0, in 10 innings. Rob Gardner hurled the first seven innings for the Yankees and allowed only three hits before going out for a pinch-batter. Lyle yielded three more hits in next three stanzas.

In the 10th, Lyle led off with a single. Horace Clarke was hit by a pitch and Thurman Munson sacrificed. Bobby Murcer then grounded to Frank Howard and when the first baseman threw wildly to the plate, Lyle scored. Roy White followed with a single to drive in Clarke with another run.
