Steve Carlton's string of 15 consecutive victories was snapped when the Braves scored in the 11th inning to defeat the Phillies' southpaw, 2-1, before a crowd of 41,212. The Braves, who had been held scoreless for 20 consecutive innings, ended their drouth with a run off Carlton in the third on a two-out double by Felix Millan and single by Hank Aaron.

The Phillies tied the score against Phil Niekro with doubles by Willie Montanez and Greg Luzinski in the eighth but then failed to score again after loading the bases. Tommy Hutton struck out, but Don Money was safe on an error. Bill Robinson flied to right field and Luzinski held third while Money advanced to second after the catch. Niekro passed John Bateman intentionally to load the bases and pitched out of the jam by getting Carlton on a pop fly.

Carlton disposed of Millan and Aaron to open the 11th, giving him a string of 19 batters retired in a row. However, Dusty Baker doubled and, after an intentional pass to Earl Williams, Mike Lum singled to drive in the Braves' winning run and hand Carlton his first defeat since losing to the Mets on May 30.
