Fergie Jenkins drew closer to his sixth straight 20-victory season when the Cubs defeated the Padres, 4-3. The win was No. 18 for Jenkins, who survived one bad inning. After the Cubs scored on a single by Ron Santo and triple by Rick Monday in the second, the Padres erupted for their runs on a triple by Fred Kendall, single by Steve Arlin and homer by Jerry Morales in the third.

The Cubs then came back with three runs in the fifth. Jose Cardenal beat out an infield hit and Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone walked. Santo and Monday each drove in a run with a single to tie the score and when Dave Roberts fumbled a grounder by Elrod Hendricks, the Cubs' winning run crossed the plate. [The Sporting News]
