A defensive change made by the Indians, who sent Tommy McCraw into the outfield in place of Alex Johnson, paid unexpected dividends in the ninth when McCraw drove in a run with a single to beat the Twins, 3-2. As a result, Gaylord Perry gained his 19th victory in his fifth try. Frank Duffy batted in the Indians' first two runs, but the Twins tied the score with homers by Jim Nettles and Bobby Darwin. Buddy Bell singled with one out in the Indians' ninth and Jack Brohamer walked. Following a forceout by Chris Chambliss, McCraw lined a single for his second hit since taking Johnson's place.
