Rick Wise's bad luck in close games continued when the Cardinals righthander lost to the Dodgers, 1-0, in a duel with Al Downing. The defeat was Wise's 10th in 13 games decided by one run.

The Dodgers scored in the first inning when Manny Mota beat out an infield hit to Ted Sizemore, advanced on the second basemen's wild throw and scored on a single by Willie Davis. However, the run became earned when Wes Parker also singled. Lou Brock stole his 50th base for the Cardinals and tied Ty Cobb's record of eight seasons with 50 or more thefts. [The Sporting News]
