An error in the 12th inning enabled the Pirates to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-2, before the Dodgers came back to take the second game, 4-3, on a balk by Bruce Kison that allowed the deciding run to score in the seventh inning. Until the 12th, all runs in the lidlifter scored on homers. Rennie Stennett provided the Pirates' first run with a round-tripper in the first inning. Steve Garvey connected for the circuit with a man on base to put the Dodgers ahead in the second and Richie Hebner saved the Pirates from defeat with the tying homer in the ninth. In the 12th, Dave Cash reached second base on a throwing error by Bill Russell and, after an intentional pass to Roberto Clemente, Manny Sanguillen singled to drive in the winning run.

In the nightcap, Russell doubled in the seventh, moved to third on an infield out and then was waved home by the umpires on Kison's balk to score what prove to be the Dodgers' deciding run. [The Sporting News]
