The Cardinals pounded their way to a 7-4 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader but then failed to hold a 6-1 lead and lost the second game to the Padres, 8-7. Ted Simmons and Matty Alou each had three hits for the Cardinals in the opener, Simmons' blows including a homer in seventh inning. Reggie Cleveland, benefitting from the attack, ended his personal five-game losing streak. Nate Colbert drove in three runs for the Padres with a single and homer.

Joe Torre hit his first homer since July 20 in the nightcap, driving in three runs in the first inning, and Bernie Carbo also homered as the Cardinals took their big lead before the Padres rallied for five runs to tie the score in the seventh. After the Cardinals went ahead again in the seventh, Derrel Thomas singled to open the eighth, took third on a single by Corrales and scored the tying run on a groundout by Cito Gaston.
