. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Yankees, after trailing 6-0, rallied to win the first game of a doubleheader, 7-6, and then completed the sweep by defeating the Royals, 9-8, in 16 innings in the second game behind the tremendous relief pitching of Lindy McDaniel. Richie Scheinblum drove in four runs with a double and bases-loaded triple and John Mayberry hit a homer to stake the Royals to their lead in the opener. However, the Yankees caught up and then scored the winning run in the ninth. Celerino Sanchez walked, Bobby Murcer singled and Roy White beat out a bunt to load the bases. Ron Swoboda fouled out, but Johnny Callison capped the Yankees' comeback with a single to drive in the winning run.

The Yankees took a 6-1 lead in the nightcap, only to fall behind when the Royals erupted for four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth. The Yankees then rallied to tie the score just when their cause appeared hopeless. White and Felipe Alou singled, but John Ellis grounded into a double play. However, Sanchez singled to drive in White and then scored himself on singles by Jerry Kenney and Thurman Munson. McDaniel took the mound in the 10th and yielded only one hit in seven innings of relief. The Yankees rewarded him with his first victory of the season when Sanchez doubled in the 16th, Kenney drew an intentional pass, Gene Michael beat out a bunt and Horace Clarke hit a sacrifice fly.
