Sparky Lyle tied Lindy McDaniel's Yankee club record for saves with his 29th of the season, but it took two grabs of line drives to preserve a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Lyle replaced Rob Gardner after Dick Billings singled with one out in the eighth inning.

Frank Howard, the first batter to face Lyle, smashed a liner caught by third baseman Celerino Sanchez. Johnny Cailison then reached into the seats to rob Tom Grieve of a possible homer on his drive to right field. Having escaped that trouble, Lyle set down the Rangers on one hit in the ninth.
