Wilbur Wood gained his 23rd victory, most for any White Sox pitcher since Red Faber won 25 games in 1921, by defeating the Yankees, 5-0. Casey Cox, recently acquired from the Rangers, started for the Yankees and was knocked out in the fourth inning when the White Sox scored three times.

Singles by Carlos May, Mike Andrews and Ed Spiezio produced the first run. After a passed ball and walk to Ed Herrmann, Luis Alvarado struck out, but Wood drew a pass to force in Rich Morales, who ran for Andrews.
