Although Nolan Ryan's shutout streak was broken, the fireballing righthander pitched the Angels to a 2-1 victory to split a doubleheader with the Athletics, who smashed three homers among their 12 hits to win the first game, 10-5. Matty Alou and Gene Tenace each homered with a man on base in the second inning of the lidlifter and Blue Moon Odom added a circuit clout in the fifth. Alou's homer was his first in the A. L. since coming to the A's from the Cardinals.

Ryan's streak of 34 scoreless innings was snapped at the outset of the nightcap when Bert Campaneris beat out a bunt, took second on a sacrifice, stole third and counted on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Jackson. The Angels tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth and put over the winning run in the sixth on a triple by Vada Pinson and single by Ken McMullen. [The Sporting News]
