The Athletics exploded for six runs in the third inning to sew up a 9-1 victory over the White Sox. Ken Holtzman, who went the route for the A's, gave up the White Sox tally in the first on a walk to Mike Andrews and singles by Dick Allen and Carlos May. Singles by Reggie Jackson and Mike Epstein, a sacrifice and double by Sal Bando put the A's ahead in the second before they broke the game wide open in the third with the first two runs of the outburst counting when Bert Campaneris was safe on an error by Andrews and Joe Rudi homered to kayo Tom Bradley.

A single by Matty Alou, double by Jackson and two walks forced in a run and disposed of Rich Gossage. Steve Kealey, becoming the third pitcher of the inning, passed Bando to send another run across the plate and Don Mincher followed with a single for two more tallies.
