Although stopped on his streak of four straight shutouts, Luis Tiant posted his seventh victory in succession when the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 4-2. Carl Yastrzemski was the batting hero for the Bosox, driving in one run with a single in the first inning and hitting a homer with a man on base in the third.

Tiant extended his scoreless string to 40 innings before Felipe Alou doubled and Celerino Sanchez singled for a Yankee run in the fifth. Bobby Murcer homered for the other tally off Tiant in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
