The Mets, who used two homers to help win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-2, fell victim in turn to two homers as the Cardinals erupted in the 13th inning to take the second game, 9-4. John Milner had five hits in five trips for the Mets in the opener, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Ken Boswell connected for the circuit with two men on base in the eighth.

Milner homered again in the first inning of the nightcap. The Mets used a double by Ed Kranepool and triple by Duffy Dyer to take a 4-1 lead in the seventh, but the Cardinals rallied to tie the score in the eighth. A walk, double by Bill Voss and single by Lou Brock produced one run. After Brock stole second, Joe Torre singled to drive in Voss and Brock. In the 13th after two walks, Ted Simmons homered off Danny Frisella to shatter the deadlock. Ken Reitz followed with a single and, after Bob Rauch relieved, Dwain Anderson also hit for the circuit.
