. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Gaylord Perry, who won 21 games for the Giants in 1966 and 23 in 1970, became the first pitcher in 40 years to enter the charmed circle in both leagues when the Indians' righthander gained his 20th victory by defeating the Red Sox, 2-1, in 10 innings. Carl Mays, who won 27 games for the Yankees in 1921 and 20 for the Reds in 1924, was the last previous hurler to turn the trick.

Perry owed thanks to Graig Nettles, who won the game with a homer. The Indians huffed and puffed to their initial run in the first. Del Unser walked, took second on a wild pitch and stopped at third on a single by Jack Brohamer. Chris Chambliss grounded to Carl Yastrzemski, who threw home to nail Unser, but Ray Fosse followed with a single to score Brohamer. Buddy Bell committed his first major league error in the seventh to allow the Red Sox to tie score. Yastrzemski beat out an infield hit, took third on a single by Reggie Smith and continued home when Bell threw wildly from center field. [The Sporting News]
