Triggered by Carlton Fisk, who hit his 20th homer of the season, the Red Sox scored four runs in the 12th inning to shoot down the Indians, 5-1, in the first game of a doubleheader before completing the sweep with a 2-0 victory in the second game. The Red Sox scored in the fourth inning of the lidlifter on a walk to Luis Aparicio, an infield out and a single by Reggie Smith. Marty Pattin protected the 1-0 lead until the ninth when Graig Nettles homered to tie the score. Bob Veale, who made his A. L. debut in relief of Pattin in the 11th, gained the victory. After Fisk shattered the deadlock with his homer in the 12th, the Red Sox followed with three more runs on a walk, singles by Doug Griffin and Phil Gagliano, an error and a safe squeeze bunt by Aparicio.

John Curtis posted the shutout in the nightcap, pitching a five-hitter. The Red Sox scored an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the second inning and did not add their other tally until Aparicio homered in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
