Homers by Willie McCovey and Bobby Bonds helped power the Giants to an 8-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Reds had rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to win the first game, 8-7. Johnny Bench drove in three runs for the Reds in the lidlifter with a homer and single, but the Giants, who had a two-run smash by Tito Fuentes, held a 7-6 lead going into the eighth. Cesar Geronimo and Darrel Chaney started the Reds' rally with singles off Randy Moffitt. Sam McDowell, relieving, uncorked a wild pitch to allow Geronimo to score. Joe Morgan then singled to drive in Chaney with the deciding run.
